Argon vs. Krypton

Krypton and Argon are the two gases most commonly used to fill insulated glass units (windows). Both gases are inert and fill the space between the panes of glass. These gases are used because they provide better insulation than air. Both Argon and Krypton are used to resist hot and cold temperature swings and improve energy efficiency. For customers seeking serious window performance, Krypton gas is generally used.

The Difference between Argon and Krypton

Argon Gas

Argon gas is cheaper, making it the more popular choice among manufacturers and consumers. The gas aids in preventing heat loss, which hinders heat from escaping through glass panes. Argon is most commonly used in double pane windows to fill the space between the panes; it works well in up to ½” spaces.

Argon is cost effective, because it is commonly found in the atmosphere, even more so than carbon dioxide. Argon is 25% more dense than air and does not react with many elements, because it is an inert gas; these factors make it an excellent choice as an insulator.

Krypton Gas

If serious window performance is your goal, Krypton is the choice for you. Krypton is actually derived from a Greek word meaning, “the hidden one.” Because Krypton is a denser gas than Argon, it is also a better insulator. Krypton is a stable and chemically non-reactive gas, making it ideal for insulation. Krypton is more effective when the gap between window panes is narrow, which is why it is more commonly found in triple pane windows than double pane. Krypton is most effective in windows with around a 1/4”- 3/8″ gap. It is also more expensive than Argon gas, because it only occurs in trace amounts within the atmosphere.

Which Gas Filler is right for me?

Argon is the most common gas filler used in residential applications. While both gases help to resist the heat and cold and improve energy efficiency, Krypton is the more efficient choice.
