Spanish Conservatories

Spanish Conservatories

Spanish conservatories are rich in texture and filled with color, similar to Spanish homes. These conservatories generally feature less glass than their English counterparts as the walls are generally constructed of traditional masonry or plaster. Operable windows with Spanish grid work are used on each wall to provide daylight and ventilation. Clay tile roofs are often accented with a skylight to bring additional daylight into the structure.

Spanish architecture commonly features arches which are easily integrated into the structure through the use of Palladian arches. Aluminum exteriors provide a low maintenance solution, while wood interiors add warmth to the conservatory. The use of wood species like Spanish cedar and pine offer a variety of grains and finish options.

The interior of Spanish conservatories are often lush and saturated in color. Deep earth tones such as browns, golds, taupes, burgundies, eggplants, and forest greens are typically associated with Spanish themes. These colors are brought into the conservatory through throw pillows, cushions on benches, draperies, and table clothes. Terra cotta or porcelain tile flooring is commonly found in Spanish conservatories.

Tropical plants can also be showcased in the conservatory; Palm trees, citrus trees, and house plants thrive in the sunlight rich environment.  The sound of running water is often found soothing, so fountains, ponds, or even built in waterfalls are often incorporated into conservatories. The mix of tropical plants, a water elements, and rich colors will help create a traditional Spanish conservatory.
