Building Vent Cavity System

Building Vent Cavity System Structure

Solar Innovations, Inc.’s patented building vent cavity system provides a higher water performance compared to traditional weep systems and can be easily integrated into Solar’s doors, windows, and structures. The patented building vent cavity system was designed to increase the rate of water drainage from a door or window’s sill during high impact storms, such as hurricanes.

The extreme weather conditions associated with this type of storm (high winds and rain) often cause water to pool at the sill of a window or door because the weep system cannot carry the water away quickly enough. This condition is caused by both the excessive water exposure and the unequal pressures between the exterior and interior of the building. The building vent cavity system balances this pressure, allowing the weep system to carry the water away before it can penetrate the door sill and damage the interior of the building.

Doors and windows provide openings in the envelope to allow for entering and exiting, ventilation, and natural lighting. However, this also invites the possibility of air and water infiltration, especially when encountering wind-driven rain. Solar’s patented vent utilizes the cavity between the interior and exterior of the building to release pressure, which allows the water to drain from the system more easily. The  special vent tube  is installed vertically to take advantage of a – lower pressure area.  The resulting pressure release allows water to escape via the weeps at the bottom of the system at a quicker rate.

Solar Innovations took the design to its test lab within its manufacturing center. The building vent cavity system helped a terrace door achieve a water test pressure that was two and a half times higher than it was able to without the system. The terrace door achieved a 6psf without the building vent cavity system, and when the door was retrofitted with the patented system, it achieved 15psf water performance with room left for improvement.
